GB’S OLYMPIC VICTORY NAMED MOST MAGICAL MOMENT OF 2008
A NEW survey has named Great Britain’s performance at this year’s Olympic Games as the most magical moment of 2008.This year British athletes scooped an impressive 47 medals – including a silver medal for County Londonderry cyclist Wendy Houvenaghal – compared to the 30 medals won in 2004.
Fourteen of the medals were achieved in the velodrome, and 15 on the water.
Second place in the poll goes to Barack Obama for winning the American presidential election. The long-running battle between Obama and John McCain has gripped UK residents as well as those living in the USA, and many are delighted he has become the first African-American to win the White House.
Third place in the poll goes to another sporting achievement – Lewis Hamilton clinching the Formula One World Championship.
Many thought the driver had lost out on the title after he trailed in six place during the Brazilian Grand Prix, but in a nail-biting finish he moved up to fifth place and secured the points needed for victory.
The poll of 3,000 Brits was conducted in conjunction with the release of brand new magical fantasy drama Merlin Vol 1 today.
As well as sporting achievement the return of the Wispa bar has caused chocolate lovers across the UK to get excited as this appears at number five in the poll.
Television and the Big Screen are really important to Brits – as the release of Sex and the City, the return of X Factor and the release The Dark Knight featuring Heath Ledger’s final performance complete the top 10.
Product manager for Merlin Vol 1 DVD said: “Brits are certainly very proud of this year’s sporting achievements, and this is probably because it has been one of the most defining sporting years in history.
“Our sportsmen and women have managed to walk away from the Olympic Games with 19 gold medals, 13 silver and 15 bronze – as well as making history in the velodrome and the Olympic pool.
“We’ve also taken the Formula One title, and are exceeding all expectations in the tennis.”
