2009 is set to be a momentous year for Belfast with ₤500 million worth of developments unveiled, including a number of landmark buildings opening their doors to the public again following extensive refurbishments.
Next Friday (6 March) the Ulster Hall will open again, marking the start of a ‘renaissance’ for Belfast, as well as a number of new developments across the city.

With Belfast City Hall due to re-open in August, the comprehensive list includes Queen’s University’s new Sir Anthony O’Reilly Library, St Malachy’s Church, Ulster Museum and Saint Anne’s Square as well as a number of new commercial, hotel and residential developments planned for the city.

Other highlights include the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge in August when Belfast’s quayside will be transformed with a large number of Tall Ships having travelled across the Atlantic from Halifax in Canada. Belfast will be thriving with an influx of tourists and a packed calendar of events for residents to enjoy too.

Speaking at the City Hall today where he revealed the extent of the investment, the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tom Hartley, said: “2009 will be Belfast’s year – it will be a year like no other in the city’s history. For against a backdrop of economic downturn and job loss, this is the time for our city to claim solutions and turn its back on despair.

“This is the year when we will showcase £500m worth of investment in Belfast. This investment has gone into maintaining and promoting the rich cultural heritage of our city through the refurbishing of its great iconic buildings like the Ulster Hall, City Hall and the Ulster Museum.

“It will go towards building on the solid foundations for the future of Belfast in the striking new developments of Saint Anne’s Square, Queen’s University’s Sir Anthony O’Reilly Library, the University of Ulster’s new Belfast Campus and the Obel Tower.

“Throughout the course of the year and year ahead, we will see how Belfast has developed into a confident and contemporary city. It is a great city to live, work, visit and invest in. It is a vibrant city full of opportunity, inspiring enterprise, creativity and change. Now is the time and Belfast is the place where anything is possible.

“Today’s event will also highlight our drive to engage in more joined-up thinking and real partnership working, that is, the public and private sectors working with a common purpose and goal to create a better Belfast. The way forward for the management of our city is through a shared responsibility of issues and a shared delivery of solutions.

“We must not stand back and let the moment pass. This is our golden opportunity to proclaim that this is Belfast’s time, its moment and we want to share it with everyone!”

The historic Ulster Hall will be the first of the iconic buildings to open in the city in 2009 after a major two-year refurbishment programme. The £8.5 million scheme includes refitting and redecorating the main auditorium, the restoration of the original metal balcony balustrade and chandelier, new roof and floors and a moveable stage extension.

Belfast City Hall is due to re-open in August after being temporarily closed since October 2007. Major renovations to the building will include replacing heating, mechanical and electrical systems, asbestos removal, drainage improvements, re-roofing and installing computer network systems.

St Malachy’s Church in Alfred Street will re-open at the end of March after being restored to its former glory thanks to a £3.5 million investment. The Ulster Museum will also re-open to the public later this year.

Other major investments for the city are The Boat development at Custom House Square in July, Saint Anne’s Square in September and the opening of M1/Westlink in March.

In 2010, the Belfast Sewers Project which will improve water quality in both the River Lagan and Blackwater River is due to be completed as is work on the Obel Tower – Northern Ireland’s tallest building. The new Lyric Theatre is due to open in 2010 and work will continue on the Titanic Signature Project which aims to establish the Titanic Quarter as a major leisure and tourism destination celebrating Belfast’s rich maritime heritage.

It has been another groundbreaking year for the team at Planetlove who kicked off the year with their new Love Fridays residency in the Beach Club, Odyssey Pavilion, Belfast, and their hugely popular Winter Session in Leopardstown.
In June their parent company, PLM Promotions, brought the fabulous ‘Live in Portrush’ beach party to the sunny shores of the North-West with Grammy award winners The Chemical Brothers and a host of chart-topping international acts and DJs including Fedde le Grand, Eric Prydz, Utah Saints and Steve Angello.
And that was followed by Planetlove’s milestone 10th anniversary festival, which was held over two days incorporating Tiesto’s massive ‘In Search of Sunrise Tour’ and the PLANETLOVE WKD festival, complete with camping and world renowned names like Pendulum and Ferry Corsten!
Magical events continued throughout the year and now Ireland’s leading electronic music brand bow out of 2008 with the party to end all parties;
Three hours of the world’s Number 1 DJ (DJ Mag Top 100) Armin van Buuren, alongside global superstars Lisa Lashes, Alex Kidd, John O’Callaghan and the voice behind some of the biggest dance hits in history (‘Beautiful’ and ‘Liberation’), Marcella Woods. Support comes from Planetlove resident DJ Mog.
And this year these iconic vinyl and CD spinners are joined by a robotic film star, ‘T8’, who is the brainchild of Bruce ‘Robocop’ Hansing and has taken the world by storm.
‘T8’ has appeared in an upcoming hip-hop music video, performed on television for the BBC and ITV, starred in the world’s most elite clubs including the Limelight (New York), Number 1 (France) and Le Pacha (Switzerland) and dazzled HRH Princess Anne and her family at The Royal Variety Show with a watching television audience of 18 million people!
The excitement surrounding this year’s WKD Winter Party is immense and pre-event ticket sales have hit an all-time high.
“We’re really looking forward to this one. It’s the perfect end to our 10th birthday year which has just been sensational from start to finish. It’s great to have Armin back with us again too,” explains Eddie Wray, Promoter.
And Judith Robinson of WKD, sponsors of Planetlove, says:
“Planetlove never stops impressing. This has been a great year for them – definitely an appropriate celebration of their 10th anniversary – so this is the ideal way to end it. We’re really proud to be associated with Planetlove.”
Planetlove’s WKD Winter Party – ‘Dance Against The Machine’ is almost upon us!

TICKETS
Standard and VIP tickets are available from www.planetlovemusic.com, Ticketmaster and independent outlets nationwide priced at (standard) £32.50 (+bf) and (VIP) £52.50 (+bf). For more ticket information see below artist blurbs.

A global icon and true trance legend, this is your only chance to see Armin van Buuren perform in Northern Ireland this year!

Lisa Lashes:
The self-professed Queen of Hard Dance!
For over a decade Lisa Lashes has entertained the masses across the UK, Europe and the world.
Undeniably the world’s leading female DJ, Lashes is renowned for playing some of the most amazing sets ever witnessed in Ireland and continues to sell-out venues across the island wherever she plays.
Her ‘Lashed’ clubbing brand has proved to be a phenomenal success and the popularity of her harder edged sets refuse to dwindle with her playing some of the biggest clubs in Ibiza, Tenerife, Cyprus, Canada and South Korea this summer alone!
Lashes continues to release productions under an array of aliases and after producing some of the biggest tracks in Hard Dance she is diversifying in to other genres, thus keeping her sounds as fresh as ever.

Alex Kidd:
Alex Kidd is undeniably one of the most eccentric, energetic and craziest artists on the DJ circuit today!
Thumping out some of the hardest and freshest sounds in electronic music, Kidd’s raw passion and enthusiasm for what he does has transformed him in to one of the most popular DJ’s in Europe.
His unique ability in cutting up the hottest hard dance sounds with CDJs and fx machines has propelled him to the forefront of harder edged music and set him apart from the competition.
This year sees him take his ‘Kiddfectious’ brand Stateside as he prepares to conquer the USA and Canada!

John O’Callaghan:
Described by Paul van Dyk as “one of the most exciting producers in the world today,” Irish DJ/producer John O’Callaghan has taken the trance world by storm!
Over the past two years O’Callaghan has remixed for some of the biggest artists in the world and earned releases on world renowned record labels such as Armada, Vandit, Discover and Euphonic.
His 2007 production ‘Big Sky’ became an instant trance anthem and received worldwide support from just about every DJ in the genre and catapulted him to the forefront of the world’s DJing circuit!
With tours of South America, the Far East and Australia already under his belt, O’Callaghan sits proudly as one of the most in-demand DJs and producers in the world today.

Marcella Woods:
Marcella Woods is the voice behind some of the biggest dance classics of all time.
Her collaboration with Matt Darey on the massive trance anthems ‘Beautiful,’ ‘Liberation’ and ‘Fly Like an Angel’ propelled both artists to world stardom and sold millions of records across the globe!
Now working alongside her brother (Michael Woods aka Warrior) under the guise Out of Office, Woods is introducing her amazing vocal talent to the world of electro.
Out of Office’s first release, ‘Hands Up,’ won huge support from the likes of Roger Sanchez and Pete Tong and went on to be a massive hit on both Radio 1 and MTV, thus reinforcing Woods’ status as one of the leading electronic vocalists and Live PA’s in the world!

DJ Mog:
The cornerstone of PLM events throughout Ireland and abroad, DJ Mog is PLANETLOVE’s resident DJ.
The Belfast boy has established himself as one of the nation’s leading DJs/producers, not only DJing across the island but also releasing a string of productions under numerous aliases.
In 2006 his electro remix of the Killers’ anthem ‘Mr Brightside’ (under his Krowd Killerz guise) brought him genre-wide support from the world’s biggest DJs including Judge Jules, Pete Tong, Dave Pearce and Annie Mac to name but a few.
Mog continues to release material under the names Space Hustlers, Tatoe & Tease, Krowd Killerz and DJ Mog and remix requests have been flooding in from some of the biggest names in trance and electro!
Fourteen of the medals were achieved in the velodrome, and 15 on the water.
Second place in the poll goes to Barack Obama for winning the American presidential election. The long-running battle between Obama and John McCain has gripped UK residents as well as those living in the USA, and many are delighted he has become the first African-American to win the White House.
Third place in the poll goes to another sporting achievement – Lewis Hamilton clinching the Formula One World Championship.
Many thought the driver had lost out on the title after he trailed in six place during the Brazilian Grand Prix, but in a nail-biting finish he moved up to fifth place and secured the points needed for victory.
The poll of 3,000 Brits was conducted in conjunction with the release of brand new magical fantasy drama Merlin Vol 1 today.
As well as sporting achievement the return of the Wispa bar has caused chocolate lovers across the UK to get excited as this appears at number five in the poll.
Television and the Big Screen are really important to Brits – as the release of Sex and the City, the return of X Factor and the release The Dark Knight featuring Heath Ledger’s final performance complete the top 10.
Product manager for Merlin Vol 1 DVD said: “Brits are certainly very proud of this year’s sporting achievements, and this is probably because it has been one of the most defining sporting years in history.
“Our sportsmen and women have managed to walk away from the Olympic Games with 19 gold medals, 13 silver and 15 bronze – as well as making history in the velodrome and the Olympic pool.
“We’ve also taken the Formula One title, and are exceeding all expectations in the tennis.”

Fellow WAG and girlband member Victoria Beckham took second place with her radical new do, just pipping TV presenter Kelly Brook’s gorgeous waves to third place.
Cheryl’s glamorous style have won her a string of male admirers since she burst onto the music scene with Girls Aloud in 2002, and more recently onto TV screens as a judge on reality talent competition The X Factor.
Trevor Sorbie, said: “It’s no surprise to us that Cheryl’s hair came out on top. There is something very attractive about gorgeous glossy hair.
“Cheryl’s hair always looks in perfect condition with a great colour, which really suits her.
“I also love Victoria’s new style it’s a great example of our daring British spirit – never afraid to try something new”.
Rehab singer Amy Winehouse didn’t fare quite so well in the poll of 2,000 women.
The troubled songstress’ often slightly dishevelled beehive was named the worst celebrity style.
Trevor said: “It’s a shame that Amy is caught so often by photographers who are so keen to snap her at her worst, because she is a real trend setter, responsible for single handedly re-launching one of history’s most iconic hairstyles”.
The Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker Bowles came second in the poll of worst hairstyles, with her old fashioned barnet, followed by Courtney Love and Kelly Osbourne and newlywed Peaches Geldolf.

HUMAN rights campaigners have published information showing deep-rooted prejudice and intolerance towards LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual) people across eastern Europe.
As a new photographic exhibition opens in Belfast, Amnesty International reported that, in countries including Russia, Lithuania, Poland, Croatia and Estonia, participants in Pride events have faced threats and official hostility even before they march.

They have been jeered at, spat at, and pummeled with bottles, eggs, excrement, and fists by protesters, sometimes while police look on. Some events are banned outright, in violation of international law, while authorities breach their obligations, claiming security concerns and the violation of what they perceive as spiritual and moral values.
The “Hate and Pride in Riga” exhibition features images from the May 2008 Pride March in Riga, the capital of the Baltic state of Latvia.
Amnesty supporters from 30 countries travelled to Riga to support the local Mozaika (“Mosaic”) alliance of LGBT people by marching with them through the streets of the city. Unlike in previous years the march was well protected by police although participants still suffered a torrent of abuse from anti-gay protesters and experience threats of losing jobs and other ongoing persecution.
Amnesty International’s Northern Ireland Programme Director, Patrick Corrigan, said: “Despite some fringe opposition, Belfast’s Pride parade has become a generally good natured affair, with positive relations with the police and tremendous support from Saturday shoppers. It is therefore shocking to see the level of hate, intolerance and violence still existing elsewhere in Europe.
“Amnesty International believes that love is a human right and we will continue to show solidarity with Riga Pride until local LGBT people are able to assemble without fear of violence.”
The exhibition will be shown at The Space, Queen’s University Belfast Students’ Union until the end of November and is part of the Outburst Arts Festival.

Lead singer Kris Telford croons, moans and roars his way through each number, supported by a suitably supple Gerard Skelly on drums, in a rhythm section as imaginative as they are rock-solid and complimented perfectly by the gut busting tone of Eamon Lynch on lead guitar. The infectious feel and aching harmonies are provided by lady bass player Eilis Phillips.
Ten Gallon Hat can promise the listener many things – they know just how to shock, rock and amaze but never disappoint.

STUDENTS sitting at desks all day may be at risk from DVT (deep vein thrombosis). Most people are aware of the possible risks of DVT associated with air travel or any long, cramped coach, car or train journeys, but now there seem to be dangers associated with being glued to a computer or TV screen for hours on end – so-called e-thrombosis.
Professor Richard Beasley of New Zealand’s Wellington Hospital found that workers glued to computer screens are at greater risk of blood clots forming in their legs than long-distance air travellers.
Professor Beasley’s study looked at a group of patients admitted to hospital with blood clots and heart problems and found that 34 per cent had been seated at work for long periods.
He said: “There are considerably more people who are seated for long periods at work as part of their normal day than there are travelling”.
The study found the main groups particularly affected are workers in the IT industry and call centres.
“We had people not uncommonly working up to 12-14 hours a day and being seated for that time”, said Professor Beasley.
“Both the maximum time seated at work during a 24 hour period and the maximum time seated without getting up were associated with an increased risk of VTE (Venous ThromboEmbolism)”.
The study found that each additional hour spent sitting without getting up increased the likelihood of blood clots by 20 per cent.
The simple solution to this problem is the Circulation Booster from High Tech Health. Simply keep one under your desk and use it as a great foot rest. Then, one or twice a day, switch it on and let the “tingle” work its magic.
The Circulation Booster sends out mild electrical impulses which stimulate the thousands of nerve endings in the soles of the feet, feeling like a pleasant “tingling”. This in turn works the muscles of the calf much like gentle exercise.
Immediately the blood is circulated throughout the foot and pumped back up through the legs, improving blood circulation and reducing fluid retention around the ankles.
Regular use of the Circulation Booster significantly improves blood circulation and reduces swelling. The device has two large comfy foot pads to put your feet on and easy-to-use controls to personalise the level of muscle stimulation.
One of the UK’s leading vascular experts, Consultant Surgeon Mr Mark Whiteley MS FRCS(Gen), said: “We have tested and used the Circulation Booster and have found it to be very effective at stimulating the muscles of the calf and lower leg, causing a very good increase in blood flow. I am so impressed that I will be using it myself”.
Dr Anders Cohen, Consultant, Kings College Hospital London added: “It is well known that electrical stimulation has a positive effect on circulation in the legs, but obviously such devices have not been previously available to the public.

“If we can prevent DVT and Pulmonary Embolisms by using such devices, it is a good idea. There is still too many people dying from travel-related DVT”.
Flip Ultra, the newest ‘must-have’ gadget is the world’s first handheld camcorder with built-in software and a flip-out USB arm – which means that you can immediately upload your videos to social networking sites or send them via email. The unique device is already proving popular with students – no longer will they need to borrow a cumbersome, expensive camera to film their projects, they can simply take the Flip out of their pocket, record, upload and edit.
Students living away from home can also use the Flip Ultra to keep in touch with friends and family.
In today’s Web focused world, students are setting up blogs and websites, creating video projects that they can put online and keeping in touch with friends across the world.
Coming in a range of colours, the Flip Ultra is a great fashion accessory that can be taken anywhere to film just about anything.
Celebrities Lily Allen, Dannii Minogue and Paris Hilton have a Flip to capture lots of behind the scenes antics at shows and parties.
The Flip is extremely affordable, with the Ultra retailing at £99.99 (£119.99 for its little sister the Flip Mino).

Eileen Kelly, Centre Manager and Co-Director of the organisation said the response from the film made by award-winning director Alison Millar of Tern TV was encouraging.

She added: “We have been taking calls non-stop since the documentary was screened last night from clients past and present, concerned members of the public, other voluntary organisations and professionals we work with who didn’t realise the extent of the financial crisis offering everything from a simple message of encouragement to donations.
“More than one person have even came to the Centre with their donation and we would like to thank everyone for their kindness.

“The messages of support and donations have lifted the spirits of the organisation and we believe this is just the beginning of our fight to survive.

“Now we would call on all our politicians and public representatives to take heed of what their constituents want and to help us support victims and survivors of rape and sexual abuse”.

The documentary screened on BBC last night highlighted the financial plight of the organisation as well as that of its staff members who have been working without pay for approximately nine months.

It also told the stories of four survivors who all expressed the fact that they felt without the Centre they would be “just another suicide statistic”.

For more information or to make a donation to the Rape Crisis & Sexual Abuse Centre you can log onto rapecrisisni.com or call 02890 329001 or 02890 329002.
